The reason I choose countries for my collections is that every culture, every country has its own use of color. You see it in the streets, the buildings, the clothes, the jewellery. It encompasses a lot of history, which is why the use of color is a culture in itself. With each collection I travel through color to these fantastically beautiful places on this globe. This also applies to the Mexico Collection.
Using complementary colors such as red and blue. It is a way of painting that is outside my comfort zone. I'm used to starting with complementary colors and then mixing them with colors that are close to each other so that it has unity and consistency. I'm now experimenting with this collection to step out of that comfort zone and get a totally new perspective on using together
challenging colors without being childish or circus-like.
In this collection I am inspired by Mexican jewelry and clothing, the house of Frida Kahlo, Casa Azul and the colors that contemporary Mexican artists use in their work. The colors orange, blue, red, purple and pink have many layers and deep tones that work incredibly beautifully against the deep green nature of Mexico.
I love how the Mexicans work with these colors in everyday life. The Dutch could use a lot more of that in our predominantly gray and rainy country!
I'm not done experimenting yet so the collection keeps growing.
