About me
Maren Roelofsen makes abstract art that starts with a predetermined plan and then intuitively continues her work.

She grew up surrounded by art and culture. From an early age, painting and the beauty of life and nature interested her. As soon as she could hold a pencil, she started making marks and never stopped drawing and painting.

Since graduating from the ArtEZ art academy in Arnhem in 2009, she has embraced abstract art. Living in Dieren, the Netherlands, she paints in the evening and night when her two young daughters are in bed.

Even though I was born in the Netherlands to parents who were also born in the Netherlands, I have French and Spanish ancestors. My French ancestors had to flee France because, as Huguenots, they were not welcome. The Spanish lineage likely dates back to the period of the Eighty Years' War when Spanish soldiers settled here and built their lives.
Most likely, this is the case for most people around the world. We all have history, ancestors, and blood relatives, and ultimately, we all share one thing in common: we are all human.
In my art, I am searching for my Spanish roots. During this journey, I feel more complete and at home in my art. I began my search with the theme of equality, aiming to connect cultures. I combined colors from different cultures with symbols and shapes from various traditions and brought them together in a painting.
Now, I have reached a point where I want to make it even more personal. I am getting to know myself through the art I create by exploring my Spanish roots.
